Self watering terrarium

About This Project

Our original design included a drainage base allowing water to to drain, this ensured algae doesn’t grow along the side of the glass as well as chemicals to pass through keeping the soil┬áhealth. We realised over time this design wasn’t enough as drought hit South Africa hard this year and many of the terrariums dried out. The succulents were fine but the bonsai terrarium took it hard.

We took from this lesson to innovate a terrarium that could water itself. Through research and innovation we manage to design a base that took it’s concept from capillary action. In short, wicking. The similar concept osmosis we expanded the base to keep it in contact with water. The base is then filled with tightly packed pebbles. This allowed the water to slowly move itself up the soil and kept it wet all year round.

All our bonsai terrarium now comes with a self watering base.
